Summer Learning Adventures for Teens

Zooniversity and Conservation Academy programs run for a full week, Monday through Friday. Introductory ZAP runs for two full weeks, Monday through Friday. Ticket sales end on the Friday prior to the start of the program week at noon.
Please choose your session dates carefully. All sales are final.

Terms and Conditions: Each person over the age of six months who attends any education program must have a ticket. Space is limited. Tickets will be scanned at the door. All classes take place rain or shine. Your purchase serves as your permission for use of your image by Sedgwick County Zoo. All reservations are final. Tickets may not be copied or resold and may be used only once. Tickets will not be replaced if lost, stolen, or unused. No refunds.

Zooniversity

Join us for an in-depth look at what zookeepers do on a daily basis by spending one week of your summer with us. Students will learn about a variety of zoo professional tasks, explore numerous areas of the Zoo, develop public speaking skills through interpretation, and practice zookeeping techniques in a fun and hands on way. There will be time spent in the classroom and around the zoo. Class begins and ends in the Cargill Learning Center. Class takes place Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon.

*This class often includes zookeeper type work and chores. Please wear closed toed shoes and dress for the weather.

Conservation Academy

Join us for an exciting hands-on look at conservation! In Conservation Academy, students will have the opportunity to assist with multiple Citizen Science projects and learn the basics of environmental interpretation. Learn how to identify birds, collect data on native box turtles, learn frog calls, count caterpillars, survey wildflowers, and more! Teens will develop public speaking skills, discover conservation science, and build leadership abilities. In Conservation Academy, we are learning, leading and saving the planet! Class takes place Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon.

Students may spend some time inside and out, but the majority of this class is spent walking outside. Please wear closed toed shoes and dress for the weather

Introductory Zookeeper Apprentice Program: Level 1

Students will learn what it takes to be a zookeeper by working in Farms, helping with various zoo tasks and learning about animals and zoos as a whole. There will be some class time, but the majority of this class is hands on out in the Zoo. This program includes an evaluation component. Our staff will evaluate each student at the end of each week to reflect upon their work ethic, attitude and work quality. Class takes place Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon for two weeks.

Introductory ZAP is the base of all future ZAP opportunities. Sedgwick County Zoo will invite students to subsequent levels who successfully complete a level of ZAP the previous summer. If you believe your student has passed Introductory ZAP and you are looking for an upper level (Intermediate or Capstone), please contact the Education Department at (316)266-8213.

A reminder: Students may spend some time inside and out, but the majority of this class is outside and includes zookeeper type work and chores. Please wear closed toed shoes and dress for the weather.
